RebornOS vs Solus?

Stability & ease of use mostly. I am wanting something that isn’t easy to break, I am not 1 to just change settings to change them, so no issue there, but if something does break I want a easy way back. Solus software choices are not as much also.

A big difference is software support. RebornOS has the Arch repositories, its own repository, the AUR and of course Flatpak and Snap.

On Solus you have to rely on Flatpak and Snap for a lot of software, which means bigger download and installation sizes. And a lot of software is simply not obtainable through a package manager.

I’m not sure I completely understand your question but if a way back is something you want I would suggest setting up timeshift

You can install that by typing this command or using bauh (graphical packakge manager) and searching for timeshift

sudo pacman -S timeshift

and setting that up using Rsync as option this gives you an ability to rollback your system
you can set it up how often it needs to make a backup

The best way to roll back your system in case something breaks are Btrfs system snapshots in my opinion. Sadly the current RebornOS installer can not create a Btrfs subvolume layout that would allow you to perform quick system rollbacks with Snapper or Timeshift, however I wrote a guide on how to achieve this on RebornOS: Btrfs system snapshots and rollbacks with Timeshift - RebornOS Wiki - RebornOS - OSDN

Still, if I remember correctly Solus uses the Calamares installer, which means you automatically get a Timeshift-compatible subvolume layout when installing on Btrfs. However, Grub-btrfs is not in the Solus repository so you’d need a live ISO to perform the system rollback.

Garuda Linux is currently the only Linux I know that offers a Timeshift-compatible Btrfs subvolume layout and configured btrfs-grub during graphical installation.
However, it does not offer the Budgie desktop as far as I know, if that’s what you’re interested in.

There’s a pacman hook/script in the aur(maybe in official repos, manjaro has it in theres). If you install it then a backup/snapshot will be made everytime you run an update

Yes, timeshift-autosnap for Timeshift and snap-pac for snapper.

Any updates to the OS coming that will add the Btrfs subvolume layout and configured btrfs-grub during graphical installation?

Sorry for giving the wrong link. I updated it.

Yes, Btrfs subvolumes + Timeshift (or snapper) + grub-btrfs for easy system snapshot and rollback is panned. There is work being done on a new installer, Fenix. It’s a netinstaller like Cnchi with lots of options, but I’ve heard it will also be able to perform offline installations. From what’s already there, it looks like it’s going to be amazing.
But since it might take some while until Fenix is ready there is already work being done to provide installation ISOs with the Calamares installer, which installs on Btrfs subvolumes by default. Installation of grub-btrfs, preconfigured for Timeshift, is also planned for installation on Btrfs with Calamares. Can’t give you estimates on when it’s ready though.

Yes we’re working on a new installer and file system choice including BTRFS is going to be a part of that
Roadmaps will be published on the site within a few weeks as I’m working on a roadmap system
