I have flashed the latest arm installer on a microsd card and was trying to get the os installed. The installer would freeze in the middle of selecting packages. Is this happening to others? Could it be device is getting hot?
Would you be able to keep a terminal open on the side running tail -f ~/install.log, with the installer window decreased in size while you do the package selection? That way when it freezes, the terminal window already on the screen shows the last set of logged messages. You can take a picture of that with your phone (assuming screenshot won’t work)
Hi, this is definitely not a normal operation, we never had that issue. What PSU are you currently using?, Radxa 30W PSU is highly recommended for a smooth operation on Rock5B. If you flashed image with Etcher, please try Rpi imager. Also try with a different MicroSD card. Have you had other Linux images working on your Rock5B before?.

Sorry i have just received my box and this happens to be the first distro i have tried. Yes it was flashed with rpi imager and i am using a 30w psu. However i am using the new metal enclosure so i am hoping its transferring heat ok if that would be an issue? I will try the terminal log and report back.
You can also monitor your temps with hardinfo

I have attempted the setup on different microsd cards and have redownloaded the iso all resulting with the same outcome. I have took a screenshot of the log but i have to note that it doesnot always freeze on this screen. Sometimes even before starting the setup. I have monitored my temp it ranges around 30deg. The one last thing i will try is to remove my nvme drive from socket and maybe that could be the cause of the freezing. I will report back. Pic below
Just confirmed the nvme is not the cause of the system freezing. It seems that if i lower my display resolution, i can get a bit further. Is it possible this could be a graphic glitch?

What kind of PSU are you using with your Rock5B? I tried reproducing your error and it works just fine on all my Rock5B’s from either uSD or NVMe as long as I use Radxa official 30W PSU. If I boot from uSD with NVMe plugged in using a Rpi4 PSU or even a Radxa 60W PSU, it automatically reboots, installation is not even completed. This is most likely a power issue.
The psu im using is the radxa 30w.
What is your native display resolution on your monitor? On our tests, it has worked without issues on 1080p and 4K PC monitors.
Im running 1080p via hdmi. Armbian seems to run fine and have no issues with that distro. I have ran all the firmware updates on armbian and retried the reborn os distro again. Unfortunately i still get the same result. Is there a way i can send you a system log? I much prefer arch over debian.
There is like a small pulsing hum every second when i run this distro. Can i turn off compositor on this desktop?

I got it working finally. This time I booted my device and quickly ran the terminal and updated the system. Rebooted and finally was able to get through the setup. There must of been something in the update that fixed the issue I was having. By default the iso would not work but im glad it was as simple as just updated the os.
I installed cinnamon desktop and at first it was working ok. However a few minutes in, the desktop will freeze and restart. Does the kernel not support this DE? Should I just stick with xfce?
Some DE’s are more stable than others. I’d recommend XFCE but have used Cinnamon and Budgie also on Rock5B. Cinnamon and Budgie were stable enough for me on Rock5B, I tested them for about a week each one and never experienced any reboots/freezing so far.
I set it up to directly boot to nvme and it appears to be running better now. Running a few minutes now and it hasnt froze so I hope it stays this way =p
Running youtube on firefox appears to freeze the system however am able to force close. Does youtube playback work or do I need to setup additional parameters?
