Gnome screen recorder gone after update to 43

Hello,

It is me again  So when I updated to Gnome 43 it seems to have removed the screen recorder option. I found this thread on it but the suggestions didn’t help as I already have these plugins installed:

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=280892

When pressing “printscreen” I no longer have the record option as the user above shows in his screenshot. And when I do the keyboard shortcut this also does not bring up screen recording.

Here is my version:

Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could try to get it working again?

Thanks for reading!

Do you have those plugin packages mentioned in the link you shared?

sudo pacman -S --needed gst-plugins-good gst-plugin-pipewire

You may have to logout and login (or reboot) to test whether this worked

Yes and since Gnome 43 install I have rebooted several times:

On the login screen (which is different from the lock screen), if you click on your username, a small gear icon appears on the bottom right of your screen where you can select Xorg or Wayland. Do you want to try switching them to see if the screen recorder works on Xorg or Wayland?

For some reason I no longer have those options. I did have to reinstall Gnome at one point about a year back maybe that is why:

Logging out to get this screenshot seems to have fixed it! So strange but I am back in business. Thanks for your time.

Upon further investigation I understand why the logout worked. I had disabled a new extension called “Bowser Gnome Extension” that allows links to be directed to specified browsers. I just tried enabling it again and the record button disappeared. So if someone has a similar issue, try disabling user added gnome extensions:

Well unfortunately that must have all been a coincidence. I disabled this extension again logged in/out and the recorder is gone again. I went so far as to disabled all my user extensions, log out/in and then even restart a few times and yet still no recorder. So strange that it did show up that one time when I logged out.

Try the GNOME option on the login screen, and then try the GNOME on Xorg option. Do you notice any of them bringing up the screen recorder?

Ah yes seemed to show up now on Xorg. Should I just use Xorg? (I have no idea what the difference is)

Looks like that may be what you need for now. I am unsure what is preventing Wayland from displaying the screen recorder. Xorg and Wayland are different display servers. Wayland is the new thing and may result in some applications not working (like Onboard onscreen keyboard the last time I checked). Gnome currently uses Wayland by default. Xorg has been around for a while and most other desktops use Xorg. It is fine to use Xorg
